The Geriatric Health Services Research Lab conducts meaningful research which aims to enhance the quality of care and life of both older adults and their friend or family care givers and care partners. Our research spans hospitals, homes, and community-based settings where we examine how care is delivered and identify opportunities for improvement. We used a range of methods from analyzing large data sets to conducting interviews and focus groups. Our projects are grounded in real world challenges and aim to inform policy, practice and innovation in aging and caregiving. The following are examples of questions that currently guide our research:
- How can we best implement effective programs and services for older adults and their family caregivers in the community?
- In what ways can identifying the needs of family caregivers better prepare them to provide safe and reliable care for older adults?
- Does improving patient and family caregivers’ preparedness for hospital discharge reduce poor health outcomes and service utilization?
Beyond the research itself, what makes our lab truly special is the culture we build among the people involved. We value curiosity, collaboration and mutual respect. We encourage our lab members to ask questions and take risks in order to assist them in growing as scholars, future medical and health practitioners, future researchers, and future educators within the higher education setting.
