Kinesiology Poster Presentation Helps High School Teacher

Delaney Reilly, Haley Rohloff (both Physical Education majors), Stephanie Woodson (Health Promotion and Health Equity major) and Dan Timm (Faculty Associate) in the Department of Kinesiology presented Integrating Indigenous History, Culture, and Tribal Sovereignty into Teaching Physical Education during the poster session at the Wisconsin Health and Physical Education Convention in Wisconsin Dells on Thursday, October 24. The poster showcased ideas the three students developed in Kinesiology 353 Health and Physical Education in a Multicultural Society for integrating Indigenous content into physical education classes. Their work was part of their instruction in Act 31. Act 31 requires teacher education students receive training in the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of the federally recognized tribes and bands in Wisconsin.

One visitor to the poster commented the high school where she works had an incident of students doing an inappropriate dance and the school was attempting to educate students on Indigenous people. This individual was excited to see how she could help in physical education. She indicated she was definitely going to take Delaney, Haley, and Stephanie’s ideas and implement them into her classes.
