Duane Knudson (Ph.D. 1988, Physical Education) received the 2011 Ruth B. Glassow Biomechanics Honor Award. The Glassow Biomechanics Honor Award is given by the Biomechanics Committee (Formerly Biomechanics Academy) of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) for significant contributions to applied biomechanical research, and transmission of knowledge to the practitioner. The award was presented at a ceremony at the national convention of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and is sponsored by Vicon Motion Systems. Knudson will give a keynote lecture to the Biomechanics Committee meeting at the 2012 AAHPERD national convention.
Knudson is a professor and chair of the Department of Health and Human Performance at Texas State University in San Marcos. He is well known for his research on the biomechanics of tennis, exercise, and the application of biomechanics in professional practice. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles, 9 chapters, 3 books, and made numerous presentations. He has been elected a fellow of three scholarly societies.
The Glassow award is named for Ruth Glassow, University of Wisconsin professor and pioneer in biomechanics in Physical Education/Kinesiology. Fifteen years ago, Knudson was on the sub-committee of the Biomechanics Academy of NASPE that was charged with implementing a national award for biomechanics. This award was modeled after the Motor Development Academy’s Lolas E. Halverson Award named after another prominent UW Physical Education researcher. Knudson was instrumental in making sure the award was named for Professor Glassow and personally secured long-term funding from Peak Performance Technologies (recently bought by Vicon).
