Student organization Diverse-OT wins 2017 Bucky Award

April 13, 2017
The student organization Diverse-OT is receiving a 2017 Bucky Award for Social Justice Advocacy, an honor sponsored by UW-Madison’s Multicultural Student Center.

The 2017 Bucky Award for Social Justice Advocacy recognizes a registered student organization that "makes a strong and lasting impact on the Madison campus and community by promoting social justice and equality. They also have made great strides to educate and empower others to act on these beliefs."

Diverse OT logoDiverse-OT is a new student organization on the UW-Madison campus that was created by Caitlin Rhoten and Toni Solaru, two students with the Department of Kinesiology’s Occupational Therapy Program. Diverse-OT aims to advance the cultural climate within the School of Education’s OT Program, and the greater UW-Madison campus by providing opportunities for discussion and education on diversity and inclusion.

Diverse-OT strives to create pathways for marginalized students into the UW-OT Program, and to foster a strong community of occupational therapy students who will enter the field with knowledge about the experiences of underrepresented peoples and equipped to address health disparities.

Diverse-OT was created in 2016, and only eight months after creation has grown to a total of 53 members. The organization has already organized several interprofessional events, as well as monthly events with speakers presenting on areas such as race, religion and sexuality.
