Adapted Fitness and Personal Training - General Information

Students

The Adapted Fitness and Personal Training classes offered through the Physical Education Activity Program serves a very diverse student population. The classes are designed to accommodate students with permanent as well as temporary disabilities. Classes are also designed to accommodate students who are interested in personal training and those who are concerned with stress management, weight management and those individuals who might feel they need more individualized attention in getting started with learning about and establishing a healthier lifestyle. In addition to health and fitness some students work on improving activities of daily living and as a result become more independent from both physical and personal assistance. For those that need it one-on-one assistance can be provided for transfers to and from exercise equipment as well as in and out of the pool. Typically three classes are offered in the Natatorium Gym #6 and one class is offered in SERF Pool. During the early part of the fall semester a specially designed section of the class has been devoted to outdoor pursuit activities. In the recent past adapted canoeing and kayaking have been offered. Adapted sailing is being planned for the coming fall.

  • Monday and Wednesday in Gym #6 of the Natatorium from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday in Gym #6 of the Natatorium from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday in Gym #6 of the Natatorium from 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.
  • Fridays in the SERF Pool from 9:20 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Volunteers

Volunteers are very important to the success of the Adapted Physical Activity classes. It is only through the many volunteers and field experience students that we are able to serve the growing number of clients that participate each semester. The high number of volunteers also enables each class to serve a very diverse population. Volunteering in the Adapted Fitness and Personal Training classes is also strongly encouraged for individuals who are looking to fulfill educational code points and service learning requirements. In addition students who are collecting experience to describe in their applications to physical and occupational therapy programs or rehabilitative or special education programs are encouraged to volunteer. Typically three classes are offered in the Natatorium Gym #6 and one class is offered in SERF Pool. During the early part of the fall semester a specially designed section of the class has been devoted to outdoor pursuit activities. Recently adapted canoeing and kayaking have been offered. Adapted sailing is being planned for the coming fall.

Community

Members of the community are welcome to enroll in the Adapted Fitness and Personal Training courses. Participation requires status as a special, guest or degree earning student. Guest students are allowed to participate at a greatly reduced fee and those students who receive disability benefits might be eligible to have tuition fees waived entirely. If interested you may contact the Special and Guest Students for an application at: specialeapp@learn.uwsa.edu
In addition to becoming a special or guest student, community members who wish to become involved must meet with Tim Gattenby the Adapted Physical Education Coordinator. During this meeting you will be able to discuss and describe what your goals would be during your participation for the session. Be prepared to discuss a health history, medications, current or past treatments and services. Tim can be reached at 608-262-9562.
