Physical Activity Pedagogy
Graduate Advisor: (To be determined)
Synopsis: Physical Activity Pedagogy is the study of curricula
and instructional practices that influence movement and physical activity behavior
in order to promote better health and well-being of program participants (e.g.,
school, community, family, etc.). Research and graduate program foci are:
a) manipulation of curriculum and instruction within activity settings to positively
influence physical activity and health behaviors of program participants, b) measurement
of physical activity within a spectrum of activity settings, and c) to improve the
quality and quantity of physical activity programming for children and adolescents.
Purpose of MS: The Master’s degree with a specialization
in Physical Activity Pedagogy is designed to prepare students for further work in
a Ph.D. program and/or for practicing physical education teachers to further their
professional development in areas such as physical activity programming, instructional
styles, physical activity measurement, and research.
Purpose of Ph.D.: The Ph.D. program prepares students for research,
teaching and service in higher education. The focus of the program is to develop
independent researchers in Physical Activity Pedagogy. Collaboration in all
phases of the research process is required, and an independent research focus should
be established.
Laboratory Facilities: The Physical Activity Pedagogy Laboratory
is located in 1017 Unit II Gymnasium/Natatorium. The laboratory serves as
a site for research, teaching, and graduate student offices. Laboratory equipment
consists of:
- Video equipment (Panasonic monitors, Panasonic VHS/DVD players, Panasonic portable
DVD players, Panasonic DVD recorder, Canon and Sony camcorders, and Bogen tripods)
- Accelerometers (RT3 tri-axial and BioTrainer Pro accelerometers)
- Pedometers (Yamax and Walk4Life)
- Software (SPSS, PETAI, BEST, STEPS, Power & Precision, Fitnessgram/Activitygram,
Fitsmart, Observa System, etc.)
- Computer and printer
- Seca scales
